Local Advertising For Small Businesses

Posted by Lorenz Lammens on 25 Points
Hi,

I've written an article on the top 10 advertising techniques for local businesses (see [inactive link removed] )

I am looking for additional tips you could provide for local businesses.

In short, it recommends some of the following techniques:
- network
- team up with local businesses with similar customer base
- leave flyers on bulletin boards
- Research new start-ups
- Advertise in yellow pages
- optimize site for local search
- attend local business showcases
- cold calling
- Google Adwords

Create a marketing strategy (if you don't already have one). You need to know exactly who your business is targeting and why they should be interested in what you're selling. (Hint: The correct answer isn't "everyone" and "because we're the best").

I am assuming these businesses understand the benefits of advertising. Believing as such I suggest they:
    1) Find the advertising investments in their business category (metrics available through Nielsen or other firm of this kind in your market). Segment by type of media.
    2) Establish the market segment in which they plan to to business and find the positioning of the competition. Study their strategy and develop their own making sure a differentiation exists. A perception map is very useful for this exercise. Consider different variables.
    3) Make sure they have an ad agency or an ad counselor.
    Hope this helps!
    Juan
