What type of business is this for? How big of an ad are we talking about?

I would absolutely be in the book for that, if you can manage to get closer to the top of that section.

Is that the best way? heck no, as it is passive and only "seekers" find you. Plus you are in a sea of competition, + you are locked into a year long contract. If you are doing a one inch ad at the bottom of page 2, skip it and do a line ad.

I prefer more aggressive marketing vehicles.

Most think of accountants when taxes are due, I would want to emphasize some of the year round things accountants can do to help small businesses. Then get a list of small businesses and send them something loaded with benefits of having you (or your client), take care of their accountability issues. To relieve them of the burden of paperwork and spend more time on their business.

If there is a USP in place (what makes you different), definitely use that. All accountants look the same to me.

Can you remember the last time you searched around your office for YP book? Either can your customers. With home computer penetration at all time high levels and getting bigger, people tend to just Google everything they need, even many 50+ and 60+ adults. Use a company that can help you get a link listing when someone Googles:
Accountants Tampa Fla. Those links will prove more productive than YP display or in-column ads these days.

For a start-up company, absolutely. Once your established, scale down the yellow pages ad and focus on repeat customers and word-of-mouth.

I would rather spend the money on search engine optimization with a website to get leads.
Also on the website offer timely consumer or business tips and even a free e-newsletter that people can receive by signing up.
