How To Limit Registration Page Exits?

Hello,
I am interested in any advice and/or suggestions on how to limit the amount of web site visitors who go to a sign up or registration page and then exit, leaving the form incomplete.

I have seen certain sites use a small pop up box that may suggest: "Finish later" and ask for an email.

Is this effective? Are there other methods?

Any help is much appreciated.

    It's quite a deterrent when you visit a website and in order to do anything you have to give your personal info.
    I do not like it. There are some examples how you can do it. Let them have a good feel of what you offer, then they will be more likely to share it with you.

    Give them a reason to complete the form.
    Reduce the amount of information on the form.
    Explain why filling out the form is in their best interest, and how the information will be used.
    Break the form into smaller forms, with opt-in stages.

    The best "trick" isn't to use technology - it's to provide a motivation to people.

    Hi Mayne,

    Not sure how much information you're asking for - if it's more than a very basic name, email, title, company, you may want to consider using some marketing automation software for progressive profiling.

    These are the Eloquas, Marketos, Marketbrights - where once you fill out some basic information you can use successive visits to gather more information for lead scoring.

    One other tip from my personal experience - make sure that you're using the labels to drive the value (i.e. 'download' as opposed to 'register') and the users will be more inclined to think about what they're getting, rather than what they're giving up.

    That's a good concept.

    Language is powerful. People prefer to be in control, so using words like Download, Upload, Get Access, Search...

    These all call the person to action.

    Register... what visual comes to mind when you think of register... it oozes LONG PROCESS...

    I would use Sign-Up, CREATE...

    Also, little FRIENDLY blurbs along the process are great.

    An example would be WORDPRESS.COM

    Check their process...
