Targeting The Music Industry

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I am trying to establish a presence in the music industry. My goal is web based. Mainly for targeting musicians, bands, venues, and labels.. Any remarks on how I would be able to get this going will help. Thank you

I worked for a record label some time back and they typically are difficult to target with new information from outside the "industry sphere".

You could set up a blog and register with any social media sites that seem relevant to your target. However, getting involved personally is a better approach. Trade shows, industry events, local clubs, talent managers and basically any situation where you can meet your target and have a conversation would probably be a good way to get your foot in the door. Once you have developed some relationships and contacts, you will have more credibility with social media programs.

    hope this helps

Having also worked in the music industry, I agree with Steve.

It is the personal relationships that counts. If you come across as "interested" in any way you will not get very far.

Once you make initial contact it is important not to push your idea. These people are solicited non-stop. If you have something of interest they will find out soon enough.

The best tactic is to seek direct contact as Steve suggests. Become part of the crowd. Learn to stay up-to-date with what interests them. Have something to talk about that interests them. Be where they are. Develop the relationship.

It can be hard to break into the circle. But once you do, it is easy to network. Only when you are on the inside will you really be able to make a pitch of value.

...even when close friends ask me to use my contacts to introduce them, I always refuse. It would be the quickest way to burn my contacts.
