Pitching To Media Without Help From Of Firm

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I own a bridal show production company and initially we hired a firm to handle all the media outreach and to help increase attendee traffic. I would luke to know the best way to pitch to the media as it was very expensive to have a of firm do it as we didn't receive great results. Is pitching to the media something I should leave to the professionals?

I come from the B2B world where it is feasible to handle the trade media with minimal external PR support. The trade publications we deal with really need our content and advertising so they are pretty willing when we come to them and pitch an idea for an article. I imagine you are trying to create a buzz with local newspapers, radio and television. I bet you would be amazed at how much more receptive these media outlets are if you are able to spread some ad revenue around! Don't forget that some of the old media pitches your former firm did for you are a resource. If they weren't very effective you might not want to use them verbatim but the approach may still be valid.

Since you are targeting bridal magazines and local event publications/newspapers, you can handle setting up your PR plan internally. The magazines publish editorial calendars and you can garner the appropriate contact information from the web sites of the magazines. Also go local in your approach where you have events and target local media in the city of your events. Social media is another channel - you can post events in Craigslist as well as other local calendars. Good luck!
