Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I am doing an internship this summer where I manage a painting bussiness. to get clients I go from house to house asking if I can offer them a free estimate. does anyone have any suggestions on how not to sound like a door to door salesman?

But that's exactly the interaction you're creating. You're arriving unasked for the sole purpose of selling them your services. Instead, offer them something of value (a booklet on how to spruce up your home cheaply, how to boost the curb appeal quickly, how to makeover your home...). You need to build trust, a dialog, and listen to their needs before you can even begin to sell.

Work up the estimate before knocking on the door (assuming you are doing exterior painting). As Jay pointed out, you are selling door to door so you will have to move past that.

You will want to develop a classy brochure to leave with them expalining the benefits of your painting service. What makes your painting better than your competitors. You are in a competitive market, so you will need to come up with reasons of why they should hire you.
