Sales To Marketing Or Related Field

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
I have been a successful Sales Rep with 3 and 1/2 years experience. I have sold for two Fortune 500 companies. The last year however, has been difficult, and after working on a lot of my own marketing (Because in my view marketing has done a poor job in my territory) I have discovered I would like to look at career alternatives outside of Sales. I am thinking anything involving Web marketing or PR. I am a hard dedicated worker, with a great resume for sales but don't want a quota carrying position any longer.

You should be very qualified... but let me warn you. You are far better to market yourself as a successful salesprofessional who has decided to bring his experience into marketing.

I believe you wrote the above for effect, but it carries a message that you want to bail out of a high pressure situation.

I have spent about half of my career in sales and the other half in marketing. Clearly the marketing work has been more fun and rewarding, but I have always made more money as a salesperson.

I do not know you, and I do not know your situation or industry, but it might be a mistake for you to bail out on sales at this point. Think about yourself five years down the road, in an interview. Would you rather be the first new bailout of sales when times got rough? Or would you rather be the person who found a way to make sales and sales quota in tough times?
