By telling them about the results you've achieved for past clients (i.e., case studies). Show them how well you understand the various media, how to craft a message that gets results, and the ROI they can expect (and why). That'll make advertising with you an investment, not a guess.

To expand on Jay's good post.

Stop telling yourself its a disaster cause its a recession. Its not. You are limiting yourself and giving yourself a way out.

Just do exactly what any aggressive firm would do-- recession or not. Go out and sell something. Today, more than any other times-- people need to aggressively market themself. Your clients-- and that is an opportunity to YOU

You don't cost extra- you are an investment that pays. You know that-- get from behind the desk and sell yourself.

The biggest mistake companies make (in any economy) is to wait for people to come to them. Sure, SEO helps but you aren't talking to people that way. You need to get out of the office and talk to people. If you can or don't enjoy it, find someone who does.

Thank you for your comments and advice. I have been trying to contact clients via emails and phone calls. With the growth of the internet and other recruiting tools such as careerbuilder.com and other niche sites, it has been a bit harder to adapt to this trend. We have been trying to promote recruitment via social networking as well. I have also been promoting secondary research regarding the negative impact of cutting back on marketing and advertising. Any further suggestions are welcome and appreciated

Confused-- why would a manufacturer try to find a client via careerbuilder?

Our clients arent manufacturers. Our clients are service providers to consumers and we offer advertising, pr, and recruitment services. Examples are hospitals for nurses and accoutants for different companies.
