Don't make the mistake of thinking that "if you build it they will come." It doesn't work that way. You need to determine how your target audience will find your site, and be prepared to investment spend to generate visits/hits. Then be sure your conversion path is as effective as it can be.

There are a plethora of ways to monetize a website. It really depends on your content, and it often takes trial and error to choose or create your business model.

Here are some models:
Subscription -- I just read an interesting story in Website magazine about the daily coyote dot net, a very successful blog. I was amazed, but her business model of selling a subscription to coyote photos makes a full-time salary.

Affiliate -- Link to products and get a percentage of the sale. Google has a program; also Amazon and many others. Digital River is another big one I think.

Also, you could actually create products related to your content (like t-shirts, etc. - see Cafe Press or similar company). Or, you could provide a service. Maybe a "freemium" model where basic service/content is free, and better content requires a subscription.
