How Do I Increase Brand Loyalty?

Hi All,

Here's my dilemma. How do I go about increasing brand loyalty in a market where our product has little, or no, perceived competitive advantage? Our business is a dot com environment that sells directly to the consumer.

Revenues have increased from from $3.9m in '99 to over $100m (e) this year. Needless to say new customer acquistion is not an issue just keeping them will be down the road. I welcome any input.

    You have a real big branding challenge (but also an opportunity). Obviously there are many other online players with Flowers.com and a few other well-branded competitors and dozens of lesser or regional competitors. If it were me, I’d look to segment the market in some way so I could own and brand some portion of the overall market. In a sense you want to re-position all other competitors as not being whatever it is you are claiming to be. (whew).

    In other words, smaller is ownable and can be branded. Segmenting options might include –

    Age groups
    Culture
    Sports
    Geography
    Up scale
    Budget

    The list can go on and on. The point is you CAN brand something that the big brand players won’t go after.

    BTY segmenting by the categories above are not your only option. You can brainstorm for unique ways to provide differentiation and still market to broad psycho/demographics,
    might be –

    unique packaging/combo items
    delivery method

    You said that "our product has little, or no, perceived competitive advantage" - I cannot believe that if your sales growth is as you state!!!

    I'd start by asking some existing loyal customers just what it is about your product/service offering that makes them buy from you rather than your competitors, so that you can understand just what your competitive advantage actually is.

    Without an understanding of that competitive advantage, I'd suggest that building a customer loyalty scheme using any of the good ideas other members have suggested would be very difficult, and possibly counter-productive!
