Need Promotion For Musical

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
My theatre is doing the musical "Oklahoma" and the manager now wants a promotion that could possibly generate media attention. Of course, the show opens in a week!! Crazy and fun ideas are always good. We have a parking lot/space and show runs for four weeks. Of course, no to low cost is the bottom line. Any suggestions from your great people are appreciated! Thanks!

    For consideration:

Based on musical Oklahoma/Act 1 where Will Parker wins $50 at the fair--all the $ he needs to marry Ado Annie and a lunch basket theme runs through the act:

Purchase a large lunch basket, fill it with picnic-y type of foods. Give each attendee a raffle ticket; hold a drawing during intermission. Winner gets the lunch basket (gift certificate of $ (50?) to local restaurant and $500 is given in winner's name to local food bank. This will surely get some media attention--and do some good in your community!

    Best,

Invite your local equestrian club to perform a demo in the parking lot, and follow up with a performance of one or two of your musical numbers. Great fun for the whole family and free.

If you want cameras and turn-out, use your parking lot to hold "open auditions" (about :30/person) and require each person to sing/perform a song from Oklahoma. Encourage people to costume-up and set up a panel (not unlike the reality shows); you could even get local "celebs" to give you an hour of their time. Ask each performer to bring a donation for the food pantry, so you have a hook with a local charity. (Will get the attention of local media, but use YouTube and all available social outlets to promote audition, charity and circulate the videos throughout the run of the show.)

Make sure you get signed releases from all performers; "award" pairs of winners with host/hostess duties for a performance - let them intro the show, greet people in the lobby, let people have a photo taken with them for a donation to the charity, etc.
