How Much Do I Charge Clients For Writing Services?

Posted by Anonymous on 25 Points
I have potential clients that need me to write for them, however, I do not know how much to charge or what the standard industry rates are. Is there a website I can utilize?

Does anyone happen to know how much I can charge for the following:

Writing a Company Biography for a client.

Writing a Press Release.

Writing a Media Advisory.

Writing a Mission Statement.

Writing Website commentary/articles.

Charge what it's worth to the client. And be sure you understand and set appropriate expectations up-front, so you both know what the deliverables, terms and timing are.

Many of these are not really writing assignments, but rather THINKING assisgnments.

go to google and just put the word "cost" in front of each item.

    ex:
    "cost Writing a Press Release"

You will find people charging all over the stratosphere. A friend in the business did a survey of sorts late last year and found people writing news releases anywhere from $25 to $250.

Your fees should be based on your experience/what you bring to the table as well as the market you serve.

As Phil said, don't give your work away because it will be hard to charge what you think you deserve later on

Thank you for all of your responses. I googled as much research as I could, but I felt that most projections were on the super high end. i.e. $698 or higher for a company biography?? When Gail@Publiside mentioned that Press Releases can go for up to $250, I was shocked because most research and personal contacts were prompting me to charge at least $500 or more. I just emailed my client with the following rates: Company Biography-$400-$600, Personal Biography-$300, Mission Statement-$50/hour Not to exceed $150, Articles for the Web ($100 or higher, dependent on assignment), and Standard Press Release for $350. Hopefully, the Client will bite! Thanks again for all of your responses.

When I was freelancing these types of assignments I used the resources of Creative Business for guidelines and industry standards:
