According to the Census Bureau (2000):

    (1) E-mail is the most common Internet application at home, used by 88 percent of adults and 73 percent of children who are online.

    (2) Ninety-four million people used the Internet at home in 2000, up from 57 million in 1998.

If we more or less split the difference in e-mail use among adults and children, 80% of people who are "online" also use e-mail, making the number about 75 million.

Of course, there are people who have an e-mail address at work but not at home, and there are probably also people whose only source of Internet access and e-mail is a school or library. Therefore, I think 75 million is an absolute floor; the actual number is probably a little higher.

Sorry I don't have the answer, but perhaps this helps.

    (Computer Industry Almanac)

Don't know how many users have an email address -- probably most do.

    good luck,

Paul's answer was a good way to come up with an estimate. But it may miss out on those who don't have the Internet at home, but do at work or school.

That said, I couldn't find any data which supported provides better estimates than what Paul said. So my WAG (Wild xss Guess) would be:

Given that there are some 300 million people, and maybe 60% are worker-bees, that brings us to 180 million workers. Many of these folks already have email at home, or do not have at work, so I would add say 25 million to Paul's number and make it an even 100 million.

Maybe another 10 million students, to make it 110 million.
