I launched www.portaleducation.com.au just over a year ago. Originally I was charging a membership fee. I have been advised to get rid of member fee and instead look at generating revenue through sponsors and advertisers as well as the online events. I'm currently working on a revamp of the site. Any ideas for improvement would be greatly appreciated.

So let's say I arrive at this website because either someone recommended it to me or the search engine thought this matched my search. Looking at your home page, I don't understand what you're offering, to who, at what cost to me, and why I should care about your offer. These points need to be immediately obvious - otherwise I'm quickly leaving your site since I don't see why I should have to work so hard to figure out if I want what you're selling.

    Dear Kirsty,

Your site needs to focus more on delivering content that connects whatever it is you're offering with whatever it is your visitors are looking for. At the moment that's not happening.

The animated slides and the whirly-gig logo are a little distracting and all in all, you talk about yourself and your company twice as much as you talk about your visitor and his or her needs.

As Jay points out, it's difficult to figure out who you're targeting, what you're offering, and what your offer does.

To engage people, your copy must TELEGRAPH benefits, positioning statements, and value. The thing that's in it for your visitor must be front and centre.

You must tell people: this is what we've got, this is what it'll do for you, and this is how you get it. To do this you must use clear, concise, and compelling calls to action that direct and persuade people.

    I hope this helps.
