Are You Here To Haunt Me?

Posted by wjaspers on 50 Points
Lets say for your sake I stop by your website and at some point contact you via a web form which requires my email address. Later on, your marketing team decides, regardless if I had indicated whether or not I want your email blasts, that I would receive them.

After a few months of emails that were not very pertinent to me or my business needs I decide to unsubscribe from your email blasts. Imagine, to my dismay, that several days later, I start getting your blasts again, without ever having contacted you.

Catch my drift?
Halloween was well over a month ago, please don't come back to haunt me.

Your online reputation is at stake. Even as a potential customer or returning customer, if I realize the email you send me does not apply and I decide not to receive it anymore: please, be respectful.

I realize marketing databases can be gigantic, but not carefully handling them can really hurt your reputation. Not to mention, this increases the potential for your blast to be treated more consistently as spam.

The bottom line is to be respectful of my decision to stop receiving your email blasts. When or if I decide to ask for your email again, I'll let you know.

    Absolutely; brand reputation is important.

(I'm also not really sure where else to post comments on these kinds of things around MarketingProfs).

Send only highly relevant discounts and freebies that are short and sweet. Other communications don't stand up with today's consumer.

I agree with what you're saying. I just don't think this is the right place to say it. The forum is intended for people with questions who want help.

You're filling up my email box with questions that aren't really questions. They might make good blog posts though. Start a blog (if you don't already have one), and post them there.

People have been polite to you, but this is not a soapbox for you to rant. Your content is sensible, but it's also just a set of best practices that we marketing profs already know. You are not a fool, so you surely can find forums where your narratives may be welcome. But not here. So stop it.
