Freelance Writing/marketing Business

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
Help, I'm starting a business doing marketing and freelance writing. My background is a decade in non profit management/marketing while dabbling in writing. I need a name that reflects both while still being concise enough to grab attention.

What kind of writing will you be doing? Who are you targeting as clients?

What would make someone hire you for their project, rather than some other writer they might find through an internet search? In other words, what unique value do you hope they will find in you?

    Cheers

    Dear Teresa

Don't dabble. Either write or don't write. But don't dabble.

The other thing to bear in mind is that it's my experience that a great deal of non-profit marketing lacks punch.

If your marketing background and experience has focused on direct response marketing: strong, compelling headlines, powerful benefit lists, highly rated value propositions, powerful offers and rock solid guarantees, ultra convincing risk reversals, persuasive social proof, and focused calls to action you'll be fine.

But if it hasn't, you might need to redraw the boundaries and re educate yourself in order to be effective and competitive, and in order to generate results for your clients.

I'd also urge you to define the kind of writing you'll be doing.
The more your outlines of what you will and will not take on and
of what you can and cannot do are defined, the easier it will be
for you to focus on the needs of your clients.

Think of your skills and of where you are strongest, then focus on those areas.

Name-wise, I'd urge you to avoid anything catchy. My thoughts on names are pretty basic: by all means stand out, but ensure you clearly tell people your name and what you do. When it comes to being remembered, it's best to be remembered for what you do, for the value you bring, and for being yourself rather than being a fancy name.

I hope this helps. Good luck with your new venture.

    Hi, teresallb

Seriously, if you are a writer, you need to be able to come up with the name for your own business. ;)

ok, I definitely needed to be more specific. I plan to do freelance work in the field of addictions. It is my area of expertise and although I'd like to expand my target clients, I'll be sticking to what I know.

In my work experience, I've been able to market my organizations products' very successfully to large and small corporations so I do have a comfort level with the marketing end. Freelance work appeals due to family commitments and the desire to work less than full time hours.

While I agree with Natasha that as a writer I should be able to come up with my own name, I tend to get stuck on addiction related terms/ideas/concepts which is why I posted the question.
