How To Reach Technology Journalists Or Bloggers

Posted by Anonymous on 50 Points
First not sure if Ad / PR is the best category for this question but it seems the closest available...

What I'd like to do is to approach and engage at least several technology journalists or bloggers from tier B within next few days and get something going and then starting from mid or late next week approaching the same type of journalists / bloggers from tier A.

Proven strategy, thoughts would be much appreciated.

Thank you as always...

Don

I come from the tech space, so this one is right up my alley. I'll answer you in two parts:

    The easy part:
Do a Google news search and blog search for topics in the segment of technology that you are focused on (e.g. server virtualization, identity management, etc). The results and their rankings will be a good guide. You can also use the number of comments as an indication of readership. Next, read what they right and make sure it is targeted at the same audience you are. Also, you can do a survey of your customer and targets and find out what online publications and blogs they like to read.

    The hard part:
Engaging with your target journalists and bloggers is not easy. They are swamped with hundreds (in some cases thousands) of other people just like you that want to engage with them. The key to success is to bring value to these authors. You can do this with information, perspective, opinion, and relationships. Read their material and engage them either through their comments sections, via email, or by telephone. There have been many times when I have received a very fast call back when I had something worthy to expand a story or blog post.

    Best of Luck, JohnnyB.

Well, I've actually looked into Google news part about a week ago, and thought that's one route...

On value proposal, and probably interestingness and unique approach may all help as well.

FYI, my target market is college students, particularly those liberal arts type...

    Thanks Johnny.

Have something timely/remarkable worth sharing. If you're just announcing your latest product, unless you can tie it in with a theme that they've recently covered, you're unlikely to get noticed.
