Can An Author/book/plot Be Mentioned In Ad Copy?

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
I have an idea for an ad campaign. The campaign's theme comes from a book. Is it possible to use the stories plot in the ad campaign without copyright infringement?

I do not intend to use any direct content from the book. Simply build upon the story line. I would like to honor the author by mentioning their name and the book title.

Any ideas? Or resources you could recommend would be super.

While I don't know what your ad is for, if this story line is so original that people would recognize it, I would not use it without written consent from the author/publisher. Doing so would be plagiarism at best, copyright infringement as well.

I should add that I don't condone copying any story that belongs to an author even if vague. There are, of course, plots that are alike, which is why I wrote about the story line as I did. ;)

It's generally safest to contact the publisher/owner of the material to get an "ok".

There is seldom a problem if the exposure is strictly local. But, if it becomes viral then people take notice, which is what you want, and then you get phone calls for revenue share.

    Safe is best.

Absolutely recommend that you contact the author/publisher directly and bounce the idea of her/him/them. If it's a win-win-win everyone can be happy!
