Define "hip"

Posted by Anonymous on 50 Points
I've worked with a new ocean front boutique hotel and have struggled with the definition of hip. They want the graphics to look young and hip, and I fall short in their opinion. Can anyone explain this to me? I thought I I was hip, but maybe I 'm too old (Pink Floyd is my band) and don't sport any tats.

Relating to hotels, I'd check out these as comps:
    Hotel Gansevoort, NYC
    Cooper Square Hotel, NYC
    Aqua Hotel, Miami

Some of the images may give you an idea of the hip/trendy aesthetic.

Think edgey. Think Lady Gaga-- well quirky but not that quirkly. Think polished and contemporary, martini glasses and brighter colors. Think Indigo, W, Tablet, and M Hotels. Even their names have an edge.

The interiors are modern and sleek. The lighting is soft but still bold. Spend some time googling "boutique hotel" and you'll see what I mean.

I'm working on an interior of a boutique hotel right now-- colors mixed of clay, avocado and black. Not your grandma's Hilton!

Oh gawd Randall. And I say I need to get out more!

You can do this-- feel it. Turn Pink Floyd to an advantage-- google some current music (with videos) and do what a Pink Floyd fan would do- -light one up and feel it. Just joking (of course)!!

Phil-- boutique hotels do not mean more expensive. More expensive than a Day's Inn, but they are competitive. Of the last 10 regional managers I've had visit-- 8 have chosen a boutique hotel. And they are all in their 50's. They just don't want stoic at the end of a long day. If price was only the deciding factor, I'd be the first one to shut my door.

Hip = "With it" "Up on the latest styles, fads, and trends"

To a large degree it's in the eyes of the beholder. One person's hip might be another person's passe.

Another reason why a tight Creative Brief is imperative.

Hip is beyond trendy-- the word I'd put to it is edgy.

Thank you. It's contemporary classic. When I got my first degree in design, we'd look at the "modern classic" designers and find -- they weren't new at all. What we call modern even today-- comes from the 40's -- a time a lot of people call deco-- but contemporary classics are not deco. Your hotel will be modern in a classic way -- hip-- ahead of it's time, beyond trends that do not last and stands to the test of time. With a bit of quirk- a teeny bit of Lady Gaga...
