Urban Music Website Critique Needed

Posted by melissa on 250 Points
Please provide feedback for the website www.scestations.com - we are about to begin a redesign of this site, and I am looking for outside opinions on the design and appeal to a young urban audience.

Please provide feedback on the branding/logo, overall design, and usability from a viewer's perspective.

The site should appeal to two audiences - 1) an artist or producer looking to use this medium to get their music heard; and 2) a listener looking for new music to sample and download.

The genres they are currently focusing on are hiphop, reggae, and r&b; although eventually they are looking to expand to a wider audience (rock, metal, punk, etc.)

This is a similar request that had been posted previously, but the responses weren't very detailed.

    Hi Melissa,
I'm not a website expert but I do know quite a few people in the music business. If you'd like I could send your website to them for a critique and see if they have any feedback for you.

Let's start with a basic report from Website Grader: https://websitegrader.com/site/www.scestations.com
It contains suggestions for improving the site from an SEO perspective.

As for the home page - it's much too cluttered. My eyes don't know where to look first, since there's a lot of competing graphics and too much text. Your home page should probably focus on listeners rather than artists. Move the latest entertainment news off the home page. Reduce the copy for the "Welcome" message, and get rid of the login information (who would want to login? why?). Eliminate the left menu column entirely. Integrate the various left-hand menus with the horizontal menus. Don't immediately start playing music/welcome when someone arrives on the home page either. Don't make the "Featured Artists" section its own frame - it's confusing navigation.

Maureen, Thank you for the request to forward to folks in the music business, that would be helpful.

Jay, very insightful - yes a large reason for the redesign is to optimize the site for search engines, and that is the driving force behind the redesign. Thank you for your insight as well on the cluttered homepage - we are making some difficult design decisions with the client, and appreciate the outside feedback.

Hi Karen, I will be accepting the answers at 125 and awarding points, however was unable to change the point balance on that question.

I felt that at 125, the answers I was receiving weren't exactly what I was looking for, and therefore created a new question and increased the point offering to spur further insight within answers.
