Exterior Sign On Builidng For Cider Mill

Posted by jsurveya on 250 Points
The Paint Creek Cider Mill has expanded with an ice cream parlour, baked goods, and hot dog - fries - burgers. Instead of being open 3 months year, now will be open 9 months year. We have one end of a large historical building and am allowed one sign 2' high and 8' long to hang near the entrance under the covered porch facing the street. I am requesting assistance in laying out the wording of the sign. We have alot going on with the different foods and in this strict township there is only one chance with the sign to get it right.

Sounds like you're thinking that your sign is going to have to tell your whole story, at least in terms of all the things you do. I'm thinking otherwise. Your sign needs to bring people to you, and it needs to help people find you who are looking for you. Unless than are restrictions on what you can paint on your windows, or what you can post on them, or what you can display behind them, you've got lots of places to tell people what food you serve, what flavors you have, and so on.

Approaching it that way might eliminate the issue of how to lay out the sign, since it's mission is a reduced one.

Yes I have gotten a great many excellent suggestions on this topic and thank everyone who contributes.

Business will continue as Paint Creek Cider Mill.
Along with that name on most of the printed media we will include as a subheading or tagline -ICE CREAM/BAKED GOODS/CAFE. I guess you could say this becomes part of the logo. From there we will create the print material whether it is a kid's cone coupon in a direct mail postcard or a page in the website describing the varieties of delicious coneys with homemade chili.

There are windows on the building but are cut up into small 12" panes(except for full glass doors) and will utilize but do not want to overdo. I don't think the sign has to tell the whole story but don't I want to convey the whole food service message? Is the sign as obvious as ICE CREAM/BAKED GOODS/CAFE?
The existing monument sign near the road in front displays the sign "Paint Creek Cider Mill" along with the township offices signs. This sign has been there for years and will not be changed.

The new sign will be an expensive wood sign that has to be done right the first time.

Yes, I know about no capital letters or slashes - that was just in my response. The main thing is with the food services provided that I get the right wording in the sign which is probably as Phil detailed. What else other than Ice Cream, Baked Goods & Cafe would you possibly put on an 8' sign anyway?

Like I said earlier, a carved mahogany copper trimmed sign must be done right the first time.

Given the location and constrictions alotted (end of building, 2"x8', under covered porch) recommend

    Cafe Ice Cream Baked Goods

As far as color goes, look at the highway signs for inspiration. They get attention and provide information. I call them 'anti-nature' signs because they stick out and have done their jobs using pretty much the same color schemes for God know how long...bright blues, greens, kodak yellow, some white...Your sign needs to get attention and to provide information.

Use the door as a sign, too: PAINT CREEK CIDER MILL as a logo unto itself.Don't know if it's glass, wood, steel or what, but the long, lean sign posted above will get attention first (and from a distance!)

    Best of luck

More Appetising can be a tagline, if that makes sense under the pain Creek....

You can use the separation by vertical, not slanting, slashes. And can you try the bakery word instead of baked goods?

Paint Creek Cider Mill: More Appetising
ICE CREAM l BAKERY l CAFE
