Who Has Worked As An Editor?

Posted by Anonymous on 50 Points
Ok, here's the story...

Short version: I signed up for the $80 standard deal with PRweb and sent in my PR copy with headline, summary and copy (actually have hired someone for the headline part). And I've received a response to the effect, hmm, we don't think it sounds "sexy" or put it more appropriately very newsworthy. btw, I like their approach if not designed for using their editorial service...

Long version:
HEADLINE:
I Swear It's Not Cheating--It's Called Knowledge Notebook...

Summary:
The Ultimate Learning Software that is designed to improve organization and note retrieval, transforming the way students take notes and study for better grades.

Knowledge Notebook:
The Ultimate Learning Software

“Designed to improve organization and note retrieval,
transforming the way students take notes and study for better grades!”

Blacksburg, VA – With a marketing team of 5 Virginia Tech students led by creator, Don Chunshen Li, Knowledge Notebook is quickly spreading across campus as the new and improved way to take notes and study. Backed by proven study strategies, Knowledge Notebook helps students organize information and knowledge for enhanced comprehension, leading to academic success.
As a hybrid app, Knowledge Notebook can be used either online or offline – which is extremely useful for students who find themselves goofing off on the web during class. After class is over and when the studying begins, Knowledge Notebook will continue to boost the learning process.
Several features set Knowledge Notebook apart from note-taking software and allow it to be a fabulous tool to enhance students’ learning through knowledge gathering, organization and comprehension:

· Smart Note Taking: This note-taking tool provides three fields for taking a note: subject, tag (key concept) and notes. By using these fields, you can easily link a note to subject matter, and the tag allows you to highlight key information.
· Organize by Subject or Tag: Notes are listed in the order they were entered and can be searched and viewed by respective subject, so notes from different classes are easily distinguishable. More detailed organizing can be achieved by using “tags” which can be assigned by chosen key words or specific material, which promotes pro-active learning.
· Editing and Review: Notes can be easily adjusted to accommodate new information, and tags can be added/deleted to improve organization.

· Flash Card Creation: Knowledge Notebook comes with a study tool that allows you to create flash cards quickly and easily. With this feature, you can easily test how well you remember important concepts and definitions.
· Free Association of Notes: Each note is its own entity, but can be linked (with tags) to other notes. The Concept Mapping feature allows related information to be connected and viewed on one screen, thus eliminating the need to flip between multiple documents.

· Contextual Utilization of wikipedia: By highlighting a particular term in your notes, you are only one click away from expanding your knowledge with Wikipedia as a resource (this feature is available when you are online).

And wait, we haven’t finished yet! And here we have a secret “weapon” for you, to help you prepare for the finals! (Which are coming soon)… With Knowledge NoteBook, you can simply click on a particular subject/course, it would bring up a window that displays all your notes for the subject for the entire semester; and better, you can export all of them into one PDF document, and if you like, you can print it out and study it offline. Now you have the ultimate Flexibility and Completeness!

Don’t let the simple feel and look fool you; Knowledge Notebook has essential value is in its ability to help students not only in the classroom, but also when it comes to reviewing notes, study materials etc maximizing memory and comprehension!

Response from PRweb:

To receive full PRWeb distribution for your news release, our editors recommend you make a few changes.

Please review the following explanation(s) describing why your press release has been scored a 1 or 2:

•Your press release content appears to lack a news announcement. Please include a clear, timely and newsworthy angle in your headline, summary and lead paragraph. Common news angles include timely information about a new product or service, a business expansion or event, an organizational milestone like an anniversary or award or the issuance of a tip sheet or expert opinion on a newsworthy subject.

PRWeb Score
Our goal is to provide superior service and ensure your news releases receives the ultimate online distribution. As a result, PRWeb has created a set of editorial guidelines that take into account the need for creativity as well as our partners's guidelines. To maintain this balance, PRWeb created an editorial score of 1-5 and requires a minimum score of 3 to receive the full benefits of PRWeb's distribution.

To ensure that we can provide you with full distribution throughout our network, your press release needs to be revised to comply with the above recommendations.

---------------

So, it appears that we are inadequate in "creativity" and "guideline", for the latter, I searched the PRweb website to no avail. For for the former, what could we do?

As always many thanks in advance.

How does "A Hybrid App for Note-Taking, No One Student Should Miss It!" for the headline?

    Thanks.

Your press release is a commercial. It's not a news story.

PR Web, if it's going to be successful, has to deliver information that is of interest to someone as news. Simply describing your product -- even with a benefit mention -- is not news.

Maybe the news is that a small development team at VT has come up with an app that actually improves learning and grades without cheating. Can you get a dozen students who have used the system to provide testimonials?

Put yourself in the shoes of a journalist/reporter who has to deliver the news. Throw out the commercial.

Could anyone share their experience about PRweb in terms of measuring PR submission results?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Donli,

There is some good advise above.

Just clearly remember that a press release is not a 'sale pitch' althopugh of course it has marketing value.

So the goal of PRweb is to get your piece 'distributed'. THey have to get it in front of NEWS editors who are writing magazines, news papaers, radio slots, tv magazine shows etc.

You need to release a news that is interesting enough for them to want to use the story but that is NOT an advertorial or just blatant AD. if you want to run an ad in their publication; then you have to pay for that :) But they will give you FREE exposure if you have a news worthy interesting stroy for them to share.

It is a very fine line.

Put yourself in the shoes of a newspaper reporter and try to write a story about your latest software invention.

You can add a few features and benefits if they are truly different and news worthy. but focus mainly on the unique aspect of your story.

"12 year olf high school student invents amazing new noetaking software to improve the life of all high school students"

That is a story that will get some free inches in the news papers and tech blogs.

    Get the point?

    Good luck,

    Matthew

    A couple of things:

    a) reading from your response, you are saying, NEWS IS NOT FREE, hope you understand I paid $80 for it.

    b) are you or have you worked as an editor?

    c) it seems neither of the two headlines suggested to me, one by an individual whom I've paid for this service,
"I Swear It's Not Cheating--It's Called Knowledge NoteBook...",
nor the newest of being dispassionate about it, "Knowledge NoteBook: New Learning Software", catches editors' attention.
And I feel yours is more like the first one.

    d) on "few features and benefits if they are truly different and news worthy.", yes, I'll go back and review the write-up again, and probably it hasn't got the point across...

"but focus mainly on the unique aspect of your story", good point, thanks, probably I haven't...

The majority of it was written by an intern who is supposed to have worked on PR... oh well... are you suggesting to hire you or someone with similar background? That may not be a bad idea... Thanks.

One Simple Trick to Prepare for Finals!

Advice: Finals are coming you can’t run but to face it, read more for how to deal with it

Blacksburg, VA – As a college student, at times you study hard and other time you doze off (We’ve all been there, sure, understandable), but one thing is for sure you want to be able to get pretty good grades for the finals. Re or re-read thick textbooks, probably not, lecture handouts alone won’t suffice, your own notes, yes but some of you are not good note-taker yourself. Spending lots of time digging for notes from some college oriented websites is time consuming with the uncertainty of quality. Therefore, your best bet is, to find those few excellent note-takers of your class and ask them to share them with you or even buy from them.

    However,
    · Relying on others for learning would make you handicapped, how to overcome it? Start from next semester learn how to take notes effectively by comparing your own notes with that of excellent note-takers of your class, using a word processor for that would be very cumbersome for exporting a large number of notes quickly, so, start to think of choosing a simple and practical tool just for that, and in that light, consider Knowledge NoteBook, which will do the job well.
    · And for those excellent note-takers, you may consider to maximize your gain, that is, you do well with your academic performance with your superlative grasp of the fundamental concepts, terms and facts for a particular class, and you may want to share your notes with a large audience or even sell them. To rip this additional benefit you would need a flexible platform/tool to export your notes quickly and be able to edit its original content easily as well, for that, Knowledge NoteBook tool can help you with that.
