A Voice In An Ever Increasing Crowd

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
In my city there is an ever-increasing amount of people providing what appears to be a similar service to us.

With every Man and his dog considering themselves an IT 'expert' it is quiet understandable that the end client is bewildered by all these messages and, from market research, they are simply taking a punt, a risk, a gamble on whom to use, as our competitors all look the same, say the same and do the same (bad) job.

With such a cacophony of web messages, graphics and search engine marketing overload out there in my sector, how can we pull ahead of the masses?

I think you build your reputation one client at a time.

I am personally not a fan of trying to create some sort of unique selling proposition for IT. I have had quite a few clients who provided IT services, each told me that they were different and unique and special, and when I asked them why and how they were special, each one told me exactly the same story I had heard 10 times before.

You solve IT problems. (So does everybody else)

I agree that this is a great challenge, and I agree that you need professional marketing assistance. I would recommend that you consider trying to differentiate by marketing style.

Sometime ago, I was promoting a website development company. Of course, this website development company thought they were better and more special than anyone else. But I had a hunch... and when I called to introduce the company I would say, "we are one of those website development companies". The prospect would almost always start laughing. They appreciated honesty. apparently they were tired of self-important people calling to say how special they were. Maybe they just needed a website done.

I have also represented unique clients... and I would certainly prefer to promote a company which has an honest competitive advantage. However, if no one believes it, why bother to say it?

    James,
I have IT clients so I can't really share too much but the reason people "punt" is because they don't know HOW to evaluate the offerings.

So, teach them how to do so.
