Opening A Clothing Bank

Posted by Anonymous on 25 Points
I am opening a free clothing bank in the Simpson County area and need help on how to advertise. I need suggestions on who and where I should ask for donations. As of right now I am only addvertising on Craigslist, but would love suggestions.

I would also like help with coming up with a name for my clothing closet. Something catchy.

I want to start this project soon, as there are a number of families in my are that need help. I am going to be using the workshop behind my home.

Should I sell items that are not neccesities, such as books, what nots, toys, pictures? If I sell these items it would help to offset the cost to open and run this project. I would not be asking very much, or should I just ask for donations only?

Tell a mother with a screaming 2 year old that a toy isn't a "necessity". Books promote literacy. The state of AZ reviews 6th grade reading scores to anticipate jail capacity and plan for expansions. That knick nack or artwork may just inspire someone to take pride in their home. I could go on.

I wouldn't judge what is or isn't a necessity. I've seen one tiny change in a life-- change the entire life.

If you are selling out of your home, make sure the zoning is right. I'm sure a church would donate space for this if it isn't.

Thank you Carol I am with you and think it would just be best to give all items that are donated away to those that have need for them.

I am sorry if i have upset you. Thank you for your time and interest.

You didn't upset me-- not at all. I was just trying to make the point of "what determines a necessity". Good luck on this!

This sounds more like a not-for profit than a business concept, but if there are expenses you will still need to find some way to generate an income to cover those expenses, including compensation for your own time and contributions.

I'd certainly look to local churches and other community oriented organizations to request support. You can find sponsorship in a number of different ways, and don't be afraid to ask certain stores for donations if you can help promote their name (positive public relations.)

I want to help give you the best advice... what is it you need to do to make this concept a reality?

This is a good community service opportunity. I am sure there are a lot of households who would share their old stuffs. A donation of things would be great. Share your blessings. One person's trash can be another man's treasure.

Thank you for the advice. I am a stay at home mom, so I am not worried about making money for my time or contributions. The thrill of helping others is enough for me. So I guess now all I need is to come up with a name and start asking churches and bussiness for donations. Thanks for all your help.
