I posted this question last week....I am 40 recently divorced and changed salon s. I ve been doing hair 10 years. The troubles I was having at home leaked into my professional life. I enjoy doing hair and want to continue in this business but I am struggling.
When home life got bad two years ago I let it effect my work. I saw business start to slack off...I moved to a new salon 3 months ago and more slack off.... I lost heart and even started looking for a new job and attending college classes. But I have decieded to fight for my career and what I love. How do I rescue it now??Is it fixable??How do I build my business back up? I m good and prices are reasonable.HELP ME:) ******

I did not know how to reply to the response but I do wanna say THANK YOU u guys made me thank and lifted my spirits a little. a few more things.... I am taking college courses and I am going to withdraw it s taking crucial time from my career. I did lose customers because of my divorce and talking with each and every customer about my business and keeping them in my drama...I moved a few miles down the road to a new salon , because the owner of my old salon asked me too. She accused me of stealing towels and using some produts that did not belong to me NOT TRUE. But I left. Since i left my customers dropped again more than half. One person in my chair two weeks ago told me she heard threw the grapevine I robbed the old salon owner blind NOT TRUE.. Actually I suspect someone else in the salon of doing that. So on top of everything else my boyfriend i live with now is a convicted felon, that made me lose a good 10 people who were my friends for years!! I was aked by one of you did i have a new attitude. I just got that new attitude after being so discouraged a few weeks ago. But i m so afraid it s to late. Is the damage conttrol even possible? Honestly? I have been searching for employment have not had no luck. I m worried and sad and it depresses me. Counceling is a no go no insurance and that s expensive.
Any more advice??

    Well you need to zip it. You lost clients cause of the divorce and now you are still gabbing and losing clients. I have quit salons cause the hair dresser just went on and on about himself -- much less sharing drama and associations with felons. This is my time. As with most customers-- it's all about me. take an interest in your clients-- ask about them and zip it about you. We go to a salon to feel good. I'm not feeling good listening to someone's problems.

    Don't rule out counseling if you think it will help. there are plenty of options for the low income.

    You can save it, but if you are still talking about you and drama you haven't changed your attitude.

    Carol is right. I went to a massage therapist once who while doing the massage, talked about herself the entire hour. It was the first and last time I went to her (and it was a Massage Envy store -- I won't go back there, either.)

    You need to stop talking about your life outside the salon, period. If asked, you can be very vague, and turn the conversation back to the client. That may be the only way back. It will be tough if you remain in the same community, though.

    Clearly there a bigger issues here. As others have said you don't talk about your life anymore. If someone says something about you haveing stolen towels you can either say "sour grapes" or "if he has proof he should prosecute me".

    I like the idea of driving 1000 miles away from the area...and don't bring your roommate.
