Transitioning To A New Website

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
Hi everyone,

We are currently in the final stages of a website redesign. Before going live, we are preoccupied with the transition. We are concerned about maintaining backlinks, page rank, etc.

We asked our developers to do a 301 redirect on all the old pages to their new location equivalent. They told us that is not possible since there can be only one redirect which will redirect any of the old pages to the new home page. Is that true? We thought that each page can be individually redirected to a new location. Please provide any feedback on that.

We will also greatly appreciate any tips on the transition as it pertains to maintaining our Google rank, backlinks, etc.

Thanks a lot!

    Hi Kathleen,

Thanks for your response. I would like to clarify as we are actually keeping our domain name. We are replacing our old site with a newer version. The difference is that we are moving from an html site to a php site.

Our pages will change as follows:

    www.home.com/page1.html

    to

    www.home.com/page1.php

Does the one 301 redirect apply in this case as noted by our developers or should we redirect all pages?

We are no experts in this and we've trusted the developers so far but it seems odd to have only 1 redirect to all pages.

Based on your response, I gather that since the pages will not be exactly the same, we will need individual redirects.

As you suggest, the domain name will be the same, but there might be slight variation in the page names. How can we ensure that we don't lose the rankings?

Very good insights, I appreciate your help as this website revamp has been overwhelming.

    Thanks!
