Looking For Out Of The Box Ways To Reach My Target

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I host and organize a tennis tournament here in Canada.

The event gets good press and it is semi-successful with regards to turnout.

I’m not sure that conventional marketing is necessarily the answer in these new social media day and ages.

If you had to suggest an effective way to market a tournament so to sale tickets with regards to “out of the box” advertising, what would you suggest? Maybe social media tactics, maybe web site that asks the viewer to respond in some way...I’m open to any ideas and looking for the cleverest ones.

Depending on how good your suggestion is, I may be contacting you to buy some of your ideas.
Please fire away, nothing is off-limits!

First thought is to create a facebook fan page and then list the event on the page so people can receive invitations and provide you with feedback regarding their planned attendance.

Of course you will need to create traffic to your tennis page, probably starting with any lists you may have of current fans and supporters of your events.

Video is a great format for social media content. So creating a video, highlights of previous years event and other stuff would be good. Then post to both your FB page and youtube.

hope this gets you started, there is much more info on social media on the marketingprofs site.

Why "out of the box" ways? What if the traditional ways are most effective? Better to start with the objective than with the solution.

Sorry for the post above - I was setting up my profile before I posted and copy and pasted something in there by mistake... Here is what I really had to say:

I'd find and follow people on Twitter who have the term "tennis' in their bio - as well as people local to the area where the tournament is being held.

Join groups or pages on facebook related to Tennis and listing online that are for tennis tournaments, organizations, clubs etc.

Once you have a community/audience built up (and while building this you have been updating and tweeting good info about tennis, the tournament, other tournaments etc - and not all about your tournament and talking to other people online not necessarily about tennis as well) then I would start into promoting yours ticket sales by offering special coupon codes on facebook and twitter that afford buyers a discount on the tickets. Have a day of the week where these are posted and encourage people to share the links/retweet/recommend friends to follow or join your page etc.

You can have a twitter contest to give away two tickets to people that retweet a specific tweet - can do a random draw of people who RT'd you. (This does involve setting up a special contest page)

Have people submit tennis folly photos that get voted on and the best pic wins a ticket or can get two for one...

... well those are a couple ideas, hope they inspire you.

Sell a golden ticket. The golden ticket holder gets the VIP box for their family and gets to play a game with one of the touring pros. That's the "hook".

Then, you need a way to spread the word about the golden ticket. It could be social media, it could be a local story in the newspaper, or even have kids sell tickets (with a % going to their school, scout pack, 4H group, etc.). But it all depends on: your budget, your timing, your community, and your message.

Have your pros talk to your audience. Set up a UStream or Twitter chat with some of your pros in weeks leading up to the event. During those events, offer specials to attend the tournament.

Also, is there a community/charity element? We've done well in that department.
