Hairstylist Seeking Advice.....

Posted by Anonymous on 25 Points
I've gotten such excellent advice from this site I am back to ask a question or few.
The new Year for me is full of creative ideas. I have found doing hair to be an extremely difficult perfession to make it , to pay the bills. I love photography and it's a hobby I obsess about. My friend is new to photography and is trying to get her business going. I suggested to her to that we work together , I will do the hair and makeup and after that she will do a photo shoot for the client. Old vintage glam , pinup girl kinda deal. I am the only hairstylist that works in my shop on Saturdays so we choose this to be the day we 'd do these shoots. I am extremely excitied, she seems to be but maybe not as much as myself.
My question to you is, how to advertise and market this new venture. Pricing of a package, how do I determine this? Also, if I cannot get this friend/photogrpher as excited as myself should this be something I do alone?
I am trying to do something different in this small town, reinvent myself and really stand out!! Make money and ENJOY it.
Thanks for any input you may have on this...

Thank you,
Tonya Richard

Tonya -- It's a great idea but I suggest you both, since you're new to this kind of gig, give away a few sessions and prove your worth. Quality photography is a treasured investment and if your friend is new to the business, she needs to gain experience. You will, as well, in your new role. Once you've perfected your skills and find you work well together, you can start to charge for these services.

Don't attempt this on your own because again, photography is a honed art.

Thank you so much for your response. This is such a new adventure I'm over flowing with excitement! You said not to try this alone, I did take photography here at our community college and I do quite well. People have told me my photography is better than hers, I ve thought for awhile about doing this alone I was just afraid it would be to much for one person. Therefore i asked her to jion me, I just want her to be as excitied as I am.
    Again THANKS!!!

Excellent idea with the bridal photos; pre-ceremony, getting glammed up for the big day...wedding photogs have done that for eons, time to offer the service and get the scoop yourselves! Bring some photos (which whill help with Gail's suggestion of getting some experience), maybe a few with headpieces on...and vice versa, perhaps work with a local dress shop (or consignment shop) to have a wedding dress/flowers/etc. displayed in your shop? Lots potential. Same goes for proms and similar venues. Adding manicures, pedicures and the like can also expand your offerings and increase the excitement.

    Best of luck,

Why not focus your attention on your hair business. Its tempting being madly off in all directions, and new hobbies are always exciting, but you can't ride two horses at once. It would be more advantageous if you focused your efforts on being master of one task rather than semi good at a bunch of things.

Great answers from everyone. In particular, if your friend is not into it, don't force it. Wedding season is coming up, great idea to target brides.

If you're willing to do hair, someone is willing to take the pictures. Check out modelmayhem.com (a place where photographers, stylists, models, etc. get together to help one another). You could sign up for an account there and post your project idea. You'll definitely get responses from photographers. The thing to look out for before saying yes to any of them is to check out their portfolio and site. Yup, you can do all this for free. MM is not the answer, but its a start. Good luck.

    Cheers,
