Do We Need A Publicist?

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
My cousin had his story blow up over the weekend and is wondering if he should contact a publicist. His story has been in just about every publication across the country, as well as, MSNBC. Now Oprah's crew is contacting him to do an interview. Should he be getting something for his time? Should he hire a publicist?

What's the objective? Is it damage control, or personal publicity, or business related? Whether he needs a publicist or not will depend on what he wants out of this.

It's not clear what you mean by "... his story blew up."

As Phil alluded, if he is not familiar with working with the media, your cousin should consult with a publicist. He should be honest as to what "blew up," positively or negatively and a credible publicist will advise him whether he could help or if the situation is better suited for an attorney (your cousin may need both).

Compensation also depends upon what the story is, however if your cousin is the subject of a new story and he doesn't want to go tabloid, do not expect it.

As a minimum, get some media training/coaching to ensure that you're cousin's presentation is grounded in the message they're trying to tell and not reactive to the questions being asked.

There isn't enough information in your question to give you specific advice. I agree that you may need an attorney before a publicist. Contact one today!

If the situation is negative, which it sounds like it is, look for a publicist that specializes in crisis control. There are many great pr professionals that do, and it would be well worth your time searching for one.

    Good luck!
