Should I Have A Landing Page For My Advert

Posted by Anonymous on 25 Points
Hi
I am in the process of getting a paid advertising space on a website for a month. It is in a prominent position on the front page. The website has a lot of our target customers, so we are hoping it works out ok.

I have been told that we need a landing page, where the visitor fills out name and email so we can do other marketing to them later.

I am not sure what i need to do for the landing page.
Does landing page need to be a page on our website with a form for collecting emails?
What do I need on the landing page?
Could the landing page be a facebook fan page?

Obviously this is the first time I have done something like this, not really sure what we are trying to achieve with a landing page.
Could a landing page, with a form, put visitors off going to our website?

Does anyone have an example of a landing page?

Our website is www.geowines.co.uk (georgian wines) and the advert is going on the front page of a Russian newspaper for UK
residents.

We appreciate any help on this thanks.

Your landing page might be a special page on your website (like: newspapername.geowines.co.uk) and have the same look-and-feel that your ad does (perhaps also written in Russian) and continue the "conversation" you're starting with the reader. So if your ad says, "Love Georgian Wines?" your landing page might say, "Love Georgian Wines? So Do We. We've got the world's largest selection at incredible prices....".

Yes, capturing people's email address is a good thing if you're planning to follow up with them directly. You'd want to give them a reason to provide an email address - a special discount, special VIPs offers, etc.

The landing page lets visitors know they're in the right place and that you intend to deliver whatever you promised in the ad.

There are other possibilities too. You can use the landing page to segment your audience, so that each person is directed to an experience that is most relevant for him/her.

For example, if you serve end-user consumers, institutional consumers and distribution partners, the landing page can re-direct each of those to the section of the website that will give them what they need.

Landing pages are great when your homepage is trying to be all things to all people, and your ad is targeting a specific sub-segment of your audience.

There's a free seminar in the MarketingProfs archive that you may find useful:

It has several suggestions and tips, and examples of landing pages.

Thank you all the great feedback. I am now going to design a landing page that our visitors will find further information about Georgian wines.

Phil - I appreciate your comments on hiring a professional marketing person or agency to do this work. I have already informed the owner of these services. I know they will be able to do this so much better than me. I am just learning through trial and error.
I make websites and so know a lot about coding, php, html, css, databases etc. I am learning marketing in this case to help me further with my development skills. Marketing Profs is a great way to learn from a professional like yourself who are always willing to offer the advise. I also return the favor of my development skills to anyone out their who is also beginning in the trade. There is a thought that self learning is a more powerful way to succeed in life, rather than relying on others to do it for you. Obviously if this cleint gets serious about his business and is willing to invest in the marketing more (which I am sure he will do soon) I will defiantly point him towards marketing profs for serious marketing professionals.

Thanks again for all your help, I really do appreciate your time and effort.

    Thank you Phil,
Seriously, I would love to put a website together with one of you guys to see how different it is working from the marketing aspect of design. If anyone has a website they want putting together then please let me know. I can do this as a project in my spare time and we maybe could both benefit. An "yes of course I do this for free".

    Let me know

    Al
