All Good Bakers Needs Tagline -

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
We are All Good Bakers in upstate NY. We bake with locally-milled, organic flours (60% NY-grown grains which only 1 other baker around is doing) and other primarily local, organic ingredients. We go to great lengths to partner with small local farms and serve a variety of daily and specialty breads, and from-scratch baked goods (Bialys, handmade croissants, buttermilk scones, cinnamon buns, wholegrain muffins etc.). We've been baking for farmers markets and are about to open our first tiny retail space. Our current tagline is "Organic flours, local ingredients, vegan choices...All Good". Says the right stuff, but boring! How about "Reinventing Local Baking"?

Other bakeries around here are using lard and other mainstream ingredients - we source all of ours fair-trade & LOCAL (absolutely no preservatives, no GMO, pesticides, hormones, etc.)

We're looking for a short, cheeky tagline - we don't mind being a bit daring but have a lot of families as customers so we don't want to be vulgar (I thought "We Give Good Bread" was pretty good, but my husband the baker thinks that's too risque). I came up with another one: "There's no fakin' in our bakin'".

We'll already be using "Come Try Our Big Buns!" on some flyers w/ a picture.

Maybe the word Bad could be worked in somehow?

Feedback? Suggestions?
Many thanks!

Thank you for your suggestions! I think we need something a little more catchy somehow - something that will really make someone stop and really take a look at us. Our location isn't prime - it's in what is fondly called the "student ghetto" and there's not a lot except pizza joints around. There's also lots of sophisticated foodies that we'd like to reach outside of our physical location. Just thought of another one: NY Born & Bread.

I'll respond as promptly as possible to replies!

Your current tagline -- ""Organic flours, local ingredients, vegan choices...All Good" -- IS boring, but it sure does convey that you're truly local -- NOT corporate and NOT "clever." And maybe that's a good market position to take: your focus is on bread, not clever marketing.

I'm sorry to endorse your tagline so strongly, but it gives me (as a prospect) confidence that I'm dealing with people who really love bread.

Still, in a "student ghetto," I can see why you would want to show some affinity for the college culture nearby. And I can bet that once people get inside your store, they understand your larger message about localness and quality. You've just gotta get them inside. So how about:

So, hopefully I'm not committing an error in accepting all of your responses but I appreciate ALL of your contributions! (if I need to undo this so that points aren't unfairly distributed, please say so)

We're running this question on Facebook amongst our friends and fans - one of whom came up with what we think is a GREAT idea! "Bread Head" - we take pictures of people with Bed head, then replace their face with our bread and add a tagline like "Grains Affect Your Brain" or "NY Flour Power!" We've got a '78 bright yellow VW Bus and we're kind of hippies so we're thinking of adding in something (in the shop) about Grateful Grains. Your feedback is helping us figure this out! What do you guys think of this idea? We have the tools to implement it and could even paint our bus to advertise.

"Bread Heads" sounds great as a theme for your continuing advertising campaign!

Your approach sounds very much like what I imagine your bakery is all about -- alternative culture, a different way of doing things. That's not meant to stereotype your business but as a compliment. You're different, and it sounds like you're livin' the dream of doing well by doing good.

The VW bus is absolutely perfect because your business delivers on the "alt-lifestyle" promise.

Before you close down this exchange, please tell us your website or Facebook address, and if we're anywhere near upstate NY, I'm sure some of us will visit.

I love so many of these ideas, especially "Bare Bread" (I can think of a pretty funny photo campaign for that one!). And thanks for the support for our new idea, I think it will work out great! We even have the perfect beginning photo of my husband, mother in law and daughter when she was a baby to use that I snapped of them a couple of winters ago one early morning. We've got a friend to photoshop the bread in. Thank you all for your comments! I guess I should close this now since it appears to be bad etiquette to let these questions linger and I've gotten plenty of responses (plus I think we've settled on this campaign).
