How Long Should A Web Video Be?

Posted by lstevens on 125 Points
We are in the process of planning a new B2B website and we plan to incorporate an introductory video as well as video testimonials from our group Members. How long should the intro video be? One example I've seen feels long at 90 seconds (https://earthcareinside.com/). Should the intro video be shorter than the testimonials? My instinct says yes but I want to see what others think.

I'm a little unclear. Are you creating 2 separate videos (intro and testimonials), or combining them in to one? Regardless, the keywords are "quick and concise". Attention spans are limited, so make it short and engaging (30sec minimum; 90 max).

I build demo videos for B2B sites at Demo Duck (https://www.demoduck.com), and we typically try to keep things to 60-seconds. After a minute, people tend to start dropping off.

    Good luck!

    Thanks for the quick response!

Yes, the intro video is different from the testimonials. the intro will feature our organization president, the testimonials will be from our cooperative members on a variety of benefits we offer.

Target should probably be 30-45 seconds. If it goes past 60 seconds you're going to start losing people.

You can always invite them to view a longer video on another page if your president is unusually engaging and/or has something to say/show that the target audience will find interesting.

Talking heads are not usually the most interesting format, so perhaps you can give the president some props, insert an interesting demonstration, or cut-away to some other images if you want to flirt with the longer end of the time-range.

If it feels too long, it probably is. Focus on the value of the information being imparted. If it's important (i.e., it's "worth it" for viewers to watch), people will stay focused. But, if it strays and/or you don't respect your viewer's time, then people won't want to watch other of your videos. How long an intro? Try 15-30sec at a natural talking pace - that's about 1-2 paragraphs worth of information. If you have a story that's worth listening to, up to 3 minutes is appropriate.

    Hi Istevens
Keep in mind that, in the Internet, everything goes very fast -or is supposed to go. Next-day delivery, immediate download, check now and words alike are a constant.

So to your question: make it short, and do not exceed 60 seconds. Show its duration by the title, and think about the storyboard as a movie trailer: intense, plenty of information but also inviting to know more, agile and interesting. I personally like music rather than verbal explanations.
