Deleting Old Press & Commercials From Websites

Posted by Anonymous on 50 Points
Should we delete old commercials from our "youtube" and other press agencies?

I was beside myself. When I found out a coworker was asking other companies, press companies and normal people to delete PROMOTIONAL material made 5-10 years ago from youtube etc.

The coworker said it's outdated. I told him, leave those things alone. That old stuff is good SEO, not to mention at least people are coming to our main site. Also, there is so much out there, why bother, let's update our site with new stuff, and put the MEDIA and PRESS in the "press" section of our current website.

This old media shows we have longevity in the industry. I said, "Let's make a new commercial and post on our channel as well as our website, this will let people know of our new services etc."

What do you recommend?

PS: Most of our GOOD press was from 5-10 years ago, on National TV press etc. So I want to keep these no matter what.

Can people confuse the old stuff as new? Is it possible for them to get to it somehow thinking they are looking at the current ads? If so, that should be changed (or the stuff removed). It may benefit your SEO being there, but you don't want it to cost you by people viewing that instead of the current stuff.

Is there anything on it that you would not want said now? Have codes changed or products changed such that what is shown in the old stuff is not something you'd want out there now? For example, if the videos shows cars being driven by people without seat belts on, where now the laws require seat belts, that obsolete content likely should be removed. You don't want to appear to be promoting something not politically correct or illegal.

Well, most of the old commercials and press were either from 3rd parties like a Famous Cable shows (like National Geographic, and Travel Channel) did a complete program about us in 2003. We currently, don't offer "ALL" the stuff we did in the past, but I feel the issue is more "our current content isn't up to date." It is not really a fact of people confusing us, I feel the old stuff legitimizes us. If we delete all old press then we are forfeiting those links not to mention views and shared content. Also, what if we do something today and it goes viral? How do we delete that 10 years from now. Internet has a carbon life, and we can't "control" the net once we publish content. Also, why would we when it brings in visitors?

Your co-worker is mistaken. My advice is to leave the old content alone and to use it to link to newer content, to social media posts, and to other "well aged" content.
