Can Someone Please Give Me Some Pointers

Posted by Anonymous on 25 Points
I would love to get some pointers on the main page of my website. It's urbansoulz.com, a social website for music lovers, old school, hip hop, jazz... We interview artists on blogtalk radio also. Someone told me my site was too "New Orleans" should I redesign it?

I normally find reverse type on a dark background hard to read and depressing. But on your site it actually might fit/work. But that's not the issue.

The real issue is what you hope to accomplish with the website. What is it you want a site visitor to do? What's the call to action? What does success look like for you? How will you know if the website is "working?"

The homepage has so many links and elements, a first time visitor won't know what to do or where to go, so they'll probably hit the back button like I did. (Actually I closed the browser window because I couldn't pay attention to the page content with the music distracting me.)

I might not be in your primary target audience, so you might want to discount my comments -- and the comments of anyone else who isn't in your target audience. (I thought I was a "music lover," but maybe we define that phrase differently ...)

My feelings are in alignment with Michael's - I don't know where to look first, or what I can expect to find should I look. My suggestion is to streamline your message - make it obvious what your website is about (and to who).

    Note to Kathleen:

Despite the "Moderator" designation, I am not really a MarketingProfs employee or a moderator of KHE. (Carrie is the moderator.) I was given that designation a few years ago because I needed some of the functionality of a moderator in order to complete a project for MarketingProfs.

As for the link, as long as it's relevant to the question being asked, there is no problem. Problems arise when links are inserted strictly for commercial purposes.

Your point about features and benefits is certainly relevant.
