Who Are My Customers?

Posted by Anonymous on 475 Points
My business struggles to find our target market. We know we want office environments of 15-40 Computers... but how can I tell what type of SIC codes will yield that type of environment? If I go on employee numbers alone, I may get several agricultural companies that have no computing, or I may get hospitals that have very specific types of computing needs we can’t satisfy. In your opinion, what types of companies/industries would you see having 15+ computers and use them for generic use (MS word, excel, QuickBooks, internet, etc.)? (It’s ok if the industry yields more than 40 computers).
Thanks for your help!

Doctor's offices, hospitals, attorneys, accountants, schools (elementary through college), data processing, transcriptionists, shipping companies, manufacturing plants (plastics, wood, metal, oil, auto, electronics), Radiology clinics, large supermarkets, police stations, IRS, Pentagon, White House, FDA, furniture stores, the list goes on and on, but this should keep you busy for awhile!

    I hope this helps!

Your "target" is a pretty large target, isn't it? Maybe you need to focus in more ... geographically, industry, application, whatever.

Why not start attending meetings of small businesspeople, or the Chamber of Commerce? Or contact a business professor at the local college and ask him/her for some help, referrals, or offer to speak to a class of students who work (for a target company) during the day and attend class at night.

Write a column for the local paper, with tips, tricks, and free advice for small businesses in the area. Go the publicity route.

    Hope some of this helps.

Mgoodman gives you a great way to get your customers to come to you. Do what he says and you will begin to see customers knock the door down. Good PR, columns and articles always draw your customers to you.

My answer is your customers are those you naturally cater to when you're not trying to get customers. Your customers are those you easily serve when they are lost in their own natural habitat.

YOUR CUSTOMERS LOVE WHAT YOU DO
Your customers are those who love what you do when you are doing your best job for them. Who might these be for you? Ask your customer why did you like the buying experience I provided for you? What is it that you love about the way I serve you? How can I serve you better? & Is there anything else I can do for you? Ask this of the customers who buy from you.

Is there anything else I can do for you?

I would look at insurance agencies. That was the first type of business that came to my mind when I read your question.

    kprawel,

If Shelley tells you to look at insurance agencies you need to really consider this one. You remember the old EF Hutton commercials...well when Shelley speaks everybody listens (she can also create a killer website) She's got my vote of confidence. You can always "Try It" before you Buy it.

The real issue, is that many businesses have specialized systems to carry the business (think POS machines). I need customers that have a lot of computers that do simple tasks. I keep thinking "regular" office environments... but lack the word that describes what type of businesses have a "regular" office environment. I like many of the sugestions here. Thanks everyone for the input!

I think I'll run for president and ask Deremiah to be my campaign manager!

    Shelley,

"I am your campaign manager" and you're are The President...You're so intelligent that your thoughts are like Einstein's speed of light. The things you speak are moving so fast that they have already come to pass.
