Graphic Designer Seeking Advice

Posted by Anonymous on 500 Points
Hi,

I'm a print, web and logo designer. I'm getting ready to start sending my portfolio out to employers. My homepage is a blog that includes content about me, my career and things that creatives (most of my site visitors) might find interesting. On the site there's a link to an about page and my portfolio. Since I am a designer and I am seeking new design opportunities - should my portfolio be my homepage? Is it a bad idea to even have the blog (is it distracting)?

Lastly, the primary reason I designed my site this way was to show my personality - to introduce myself as a person (who lives design) first and a designer second.

I'd appreciate any advice you'll can offer.

Thanks, Daniel

I wouldn't suggest making your blog your homepage. Make your homepage a clear show of what you do best and for who. If you're planning to keep up a monologue (or dialogue with the general public), then use a blog as well. If you're planning to simply showcase your work/technique, use "normal" pages. People aren't hiring you for your personality, or your hobbies. They're hiring you for what you can do for them. Show them (ideally, before/after with solid stats proving better web results) instead.

Jay Hamilton-Roth is right, as usual. Prospective employers are not interested in your personality or your opinions nearly as much as they are about the results you deliver for clients. Your website should clearly show the problem you set out to solve, how you solved it, and what the results were.

It's not about pretty pictures or pleasing layouts. It's about accomplishing client objectives with design-based solutions.
