Determine Buying Patterns Of A Community? Data?

Hi! I am trying to determine what is the best small business to open in a working class african american neighborhood in New Orleans. Many moons ago I earned an MBA so I have a great appreciation for Marketing research but I'm struggling to gather the data ... Any advice to where to find data to decide would be greatly appreciated! I've thought about conducting a short survey, electronic (survey monkey) and paper (door to door) to gain data....

    Why not look at businesses in another area of similar demographics and see which businesses seem to be thriving. Even talk with some of the owners, if you can.

    Then go back to your neighborhood and see if some of those successful types of businesses are not present, and narrow your possibilities that way.

    It's pretty difficult to get people to imagine what they might need that they don't already have. Better if you can come up with some possible alternatives and then see how folks react to a limited set of options.

    Hi! What if it was a middle class African American community? What small businesses works the best in terms of profitability? I can't find hard data that delineates buying patterns of various dempgraphics...

    a few established franchises have sent me financial information but it doesn't break it down enough to help me tell if a store would perform well in middle class african american neighborhood... Any ideas ??
