How Does One Advertise A Marketing Agency?

Posted by Anonymous on 25 Points
So I am going to be starting a hybrid marketing company. And I was wondering on your thoughts about using PPC or radio or newspaper to advertise to potential clients. My main way of generating leads is Social Media, blog, SEO, and going to to local businesses and talking to the owners. Can't wait to hear what you have to say!

I'm not a big fan of using traditional advertising to promote a marketing business. The other tools you used, along with your superb expertise which will hopefully result in word-of-mouth publicity, should serve you well.

I'm with Gail. Going to local businesses and talking to the owners sounds like the right approach. Do your research before you walk in, though, so you don't waste their time. Or go in for information the first time, so you'll know what they need and whether you're the right solution for their problem.

A hybrid of what, exactly? Just curious. Anyway ... one
doesn't advertise a marketing agency, one markets it. There's a difference and here—for what it's worth—is my personal philosophy on the differences between the two areas. This is not a text book definition, its how I've come to see the difference, so let's not have other people correcting me.

Advertising's role is to create awareness of the product, goods, or service IN the market place.

Marketing, which is a part of the general advertising process, speaks to people on a deeper level of the specific benefits and values acquired as a result of using the service, product, or goods BEYOND the market place in their daily lives.

In essence, advertising shouts "Look at this! Look at this!
Look at this!" (which, after a while, can become dull) while marketing chats knowingly about all the cool things that will come about in the future BECAUSE of the use of the thing being offered.

Hybrid agency are "more nimble, tech savvy, open, and collaborative. Digital services will be ingrained into the DNA of every agency, and blended with traditional methods of execute integrated campaigns. Agencies will create and nurture diverse recurring revenue streams through a mix of services, consulting, training, education, publishing, and software sales. They will use efficiency and productivity, not billable hours, and essential drivers of profitability. Their strength and stability will depend by outcome, not outputs." - The Marketing Agency Blueprint

So in short a mix of inbound/outbound/pr, not using billable hours but using a pay tier type service.

How would anyone know from visiting that site who the target audience is? A little strange from a company that presumably makes its living by communicating effectively!

Every few years there's some radical "new" vision of marketing that's written in agency speak, and that's peppered with BS phrases about XYZ being ingrained into ABC.

If the verbiage above is a direct quote from the book
in question (and I hope for everyone's sake that the phrase "and blended with traditional methods of execute integrated campaigns." is a misquote) then Houston, we've got a problem.

The "digital" side of things is simply a delivery vehicle and the sooner the myth about digital somehow being "better" is dispelled, the better for all concerned. Forget about branding and payment and focus on the benefits and results the client will receive as a result of doing business with you.

It's not a misquote lol, it's a direct quote from the book, and just wondering, what is so problematic with it?
