How To Market A New Music Venue

Posted by lena_abbas on 125 Points
Hello,

I am an illustrator with limited to no marketing experience and have been assigned the challenging task of marketing a new music venue in the city. The owner is planning a high-end classical and jazz music venue with the occasional 'world music' gig.

It is a big job to market such a varied venue and I know generally it's going to involve a lot of social media and making connections with relevant companies specialising in classical and jazz music, as well as getting ad spots on the radio and in magazines and possibly doing some sponsorship. At this point however, the direction has been very vague and what i really need help with is asking the right questions to make my job clearer. Is this something you can help me with?

Many thanks

    Hi Lena,

You say the owner is planning a music venue in the city(?). What is the owner's plan? Is it a written business plan with a marketing plan and positioning strategy. Such a plan would describe the existing music venues (your competition), the reason there is a demand for a new venue and a strategy for launching the brand with accompanying budget.

So why would the owner assign an illustrator this marketing task without providing his/her plan? That doesn't make sense.

Unless the venue is already built and some gigs booked, there's little for you to do (other than saying "Coming Soon!"). You'll want to give people a sense of the venue, the quality of the acts, and the quality of those you're trying to attract. If you have images, use them. If you have video, use that also.
