Dissertation Topic Help

Posted by jamz_x on 250 Points
Hello,

I am fast approaching my final year at university and wanted to get a head start on my dissertation. I have decided that i would like to look into social media and guerrilla marketing as they interest me, but i cant think of how to integrate the two into an interesting study that will be a representation of my interest to prospective employers.

Any ideas/nudges in the right direction would be greatly appreciated :)

Seems like a "What to google" question?

Try googling "integration of social media and guerrilla marketing". There is plenty of information on this subject. Happy reading ...

Guerilla marketing and social media can be used effectively in a great number of ways. So let's put your question the other way around.

What are you interested in yourself? If you're going to do a study in this area, it'll be a lot more interesting if its something you already like.

What would one of your prospective employers be looking for?

So let's have a look at the practicalities first: many employers don't know what social media is, let alone guerilla marketing. Which means you'll need some sensible proof for them that your methods work.

Now: let us know what you like, or are interested in and we can come up with some ideas and approaches for you. What's more they won't cost the earth, and you'll learn an awful lot in doing it.

Also - instead of thinking "Something of interest to prospective employers" - think "Which employer would I love to work for?". Then see what problems they are facing (start with informational interviews to understand their issues), and share with them your findings/research on-the-way (both developing a longer-term relationship and possible mentor).

perhaps you can speak to the synergies between guerilla marketing and how social media is used in marketing. both aim to generate awareness via a viral channel. Also, marketing can start with a guerilla approach and use social to expand the awareness.

    Hello Moriarty,

Thank you for your reply! I'm very much interested in music and events and was thinking that i might be able to discuss the effectiveness of the two marketing methods. A prospective employer might be interested in how they might generate a buzz or how much attention their event might receive!

Hi there, and sorry for the delay in responding. I was away in Thuringen in Germany looking at railway stations. Do not ask ;-)

Music and events - this is a very broad spectrum of possibilities. In other words, rather vague. However, generating a buzz is something that ties neatly into guerilla marketing, although more from the research angle than the effective one (= social media). My point is that for a particular kind of music there'll be other interests that go along with it. For example, I spent the weekend with some very nice bikers who were touring the Harz mountains, all of whom wore black and liked heavy metal music. The point is that other kinds of music - from Brahms to the Beatles - will have similar appreciations that on the surface appear almost co-incidental..

You can use these to leverage a "buzz" in one way or another? You could advertise to bikers via heavy metal, or use heavy-metal to advertise to bikers (as a rather coarse example). You can use online advertising to give a broad idea of coverage and effectiveness at very modest cost.

What are your thoughts on this?
