It may be that some people get positions thru personal contacts and connections. You may find that these personal contacts, whether within the company or within the industry, and more important than 95% of what you are learning at the University. We have a saying in the United States: "It's not what you know, it's who you know". You need to be of service to these folks in a way that is non-threatening. There is another saying, "There is no limit to how far you can rise if you don't care who gets the credit". Make sure you make these managers look good - never embarass them. Although they may not share you enthusiasm for the nuts and bolts of marketing, they may be able to introduce you to several influental folk in your local industry. Good luck !
