How Important Really Is Mobile Responsive?

Posted by garyasanchez on 125 Points
I'm helping a company called Jimco Racing (www.jimcorace.com)
Its website DOES NOT pass the Google Mobile Friendly Test (https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly/);
Yet its site shows up fairly prominently in mobile searches.

I thought Google was going to penalize sites in mobile search for not being mobile-friendly.

Would you spend the money today to make its site mobile-friendly?

    Yes. Google may not have YET penalized this site. And more importantly, with the large number of people using smart devices, having a mobile-friendly site is a good idea. Finally, since their site is using a WP theme, it may be simple to update the theme or change to a similar theme that is already responsive.

    Sooner or later the site will need to be mobile friendly, so you might as well bite the bullet and do it now. That way you'll reap the benefits sooner. And you won't risk the wrath of Google.

    A practical reason to act now, even if Google doesn't catch you for a while: Google rewards advertisers (with discounts in Adwords) and organizations (with higher rank for natural search position) based on the number of clicks that don't bounce. If your site isn't mobile friendly, you're not going to get a lot of non-bouncing clicks from mobile users, so you'll never get the rewards (or SEO position) Google offers. In many categories mobile is already at 50% of traffic, and still growing in importance, so you don't want to miss out on those clicks ... unless you don't care about where you show up in searches.
