Is It Worth Hiring A Marketing/advertising Firm?

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
We are looking to advertise much more for our retail home & garden accents/decor gift shop in 2005. We have tried a couple different avenues for advertising in 2004 - through local events and also in a local, alternative newspaper. The event advertising has been positive; the advertising in the alternative newspaper has not.

Do you find it worth while to hire a marketing/advertising firm to help determine the best venue for retail advertising? Can they help determine how often we should be advertising and how we get our message across in our advertisements? If so, what should we be looking for from the agency?

So far, advertising has been hit or miss for us. I have read much on the subject and the two primary things I have taken away from the readings is 1) advertise consistently to get your message out and 2) make sure you are sending customers the right message. Other than those two things, advertising is very much a mystery for us and I am fearful as to how to proceed in 2005.

Thank you in advance for your help.

    Hi Shayk,

Just remember the John Wanamaker qoute "I know I am wasting half my money on advertising, I just don't know which half".

Taking this statement for what it is worth - half of what you spend - find a small local agency - usually less overhead so and hungrier so less expensive - and drill down into their references and background and see what they can do for you.

Also, take note and ask for references when you ask them to quantify their results, past, present and future i.e. show you a positive ROI, because if you can't show a positive ROI, why would you spend any money on advertising?

    I hope that helps!
