Can I Find Out Advertising Results Of A Competitor

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
Competitor A advertise on corn flakes box. We have been considering to do this but:

A) we feel large corn flake maker won't want to do anything with a small company like us;
B) we want to know competitor's results.

Is A a problem?
Can we find out B?

    I went to www.actiondog.net to try to understand what you mean by "a small company like us". This question and your web site leave a lot of questions - it is not clear to me how the company you have connects with corn flakes makers?

    On question A, if you were an ad agency, it is unlikely that they would work with a small ad agency. But you seem to have specialty audio-visual services, which if they wanted to use, they would probably be open to using a smaller firm (if the current firms they work with did not do this).

    Hi,

    I interpreted your question a bit differently: you are not the ad agency, but a competitor of the corn flakes company, right? In that case, you would indeed want to know whether this kind of advertising works for that large competitor before doing it yourself. Think about at least 3 pieces of information:
    1) did this advertising reduce your own sales? If so, it is probably working in terms of brand switching. If not, maybe you are indeed not considered in the same ball park as that large competitor. Or, the advertising simply expanded category sales
    2) does the retailer feel this advertising worked, and would it work for your firm? You could easily start this conversation, as the retailer benefits too from your success
    3) does the large competitor feel it is a success? Go to their website, talk to their ad agency, even their employees

    Hope this helps,
