How Does A Beginner Charge For His Services?

Posted by Anonymous on 50 Points
I'm an independent consultant who's starting out in PR. My degree is in Psychology and not in PR but I know alot of people and have assisted others in organizing events and marketing their businesses. An acquaintance has opened a new cafe/resto and wants me to help them in conceptualizing and executing small events to draw people in. Also, they want me to assist in marketing so more people would know of their new venture. The first proposal was that I get a percentage of the gross sales. I think I should ask more for what I'll give them, but I dont know how much. Is there a way to compute this? There are no other PR firms here. No one to compare fees with. Help!

In general, I fully agree with the previous answers: charging minimal amounts, even doing stuff for free helps you to build a reputation, which over time brings in paying clients.

Still, you now have a concrete client who want to pay you a percentage of gross sales ! I believe this is a good way to start off for both sides: the better you market, the more you make (other consultants would love such a deal: a friend of mine always jokes this way with executives of a $5B brand, who say that they owe him for where they are now!) Of course, you should negotiate on the actual % of sales: getting people in is the major challenge for the business, so you should be rewarded accordingly.
