Want To Start A Marketing Career...need Help!

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
I am already a marketing practitioner but have limited work experience. I started being a marketing assistant doing marketing admin work... and then was moved to another department due to reorganization. And then, after awhile, I was able to convince my boss to let me return to the marketing department.. now am back in marketing and I want to broaden my knowledge in it. I am not a marketing graduate but rather a business graduate. Now, I am assigned in events management. And I aspire to be a marketing manager in 3 years time. What do i need to do? do I need to take an MBA course? What are the areas of Marketing that I need to specialize in? Also, can you recommend any marketing books that I can devour? I really want to be an efficient MARKETER...Help!

Prove yourself in event management. An easy start would be to search questions (link at right) and search articles (the search box at the top) on this site for "event management" and other key terms and see what has been covered here. Lots of good stuff here.

Event management is a tactical position. Marketing management is a more strategic position. So you will also need to prepare yourself for this by doing your best to learn as much as you can about your company's products, customers, the strategic side of marketing, etc. The first two are done internally to your company - just by taking any opportunity that presents itself to learn products and customers. The third can be learned through books, classes, or just watching what others do (inside your company, or reading marketing magazines for what other companies do).

    Hello Kristine,

Bravo to you! Marketing is certainly the most fun and challenging organization.

I agree with LAmos; experience will be far more valuable than additional education at this point.

Here are a few things you can do to accelerate your knowledge and success:

    - take a leadership role in the corporate brand. If you can, volunteer to be the internal brand ambassador. It will make you known to everyone in the company and connect you with the marketing/brand strategy.

    - connect yourself with a trend. There are trends in marketing metrics, customer relationships and micro-segmentation (tweens, metrosexuals).

    - become known to the greater marketing community. Join your local mktg org and take a leadersip role or volunteer position so that you can be visible to the enttire membership.

    - build your brand on-line. Pick a mktg topic you are passionate about and build a website or blog, publish articles, etc.

    Best.

    Kristine,

Everyone here has offered some great advice. But to build on what Shardman has said let us remember in this century being knowledgeable is definitely a plus but being able to effectively communicate that knowledge is even more important and here is why.

LEARN TO EXPRESS YOURSELF...Write & Speak!!
Written communication is one art form that has awakened in this new century but so has verbal communication. Project teams and outsourcing has forced the written communication style to accelerate forward dramatically. It has also forced the art form of speaking back out toward center stage.

NO WOMAN HIDES HER CANDLE BEHIND A BUSH...
Whether you're a woman or man master communication. No one knows "you know" until you communicate it. The greatest leading experts of our times are doing both.

"MASTER COMMUNICATION"...CELL PHONES, INTERNET & THE VISUAL AGE REQUIRE IT...
It's a fact people are talking more. Using cell phone, Internet, newspaper, TV or radio is a requirement for our success. These are the signs of the times & they communicate the importance of mastering communication. Use anyone of the above & you let more people know your interest or your expertise in the subject of your choice

SPEAKING CLEARLY & QUICKLY...(What did you say?)
Most people who are speaking effectively are getting to the point quicker and more clearly.

    WATCH THE NEWS...
They use sound bites to get the point across faster. But they say what they mean in more clear terms. Listen to the radio they use sound only to deliver their message. Again Kristine learn to speak clearly & quickly. This alone will accelerate your career by light years.

FINALLY READ...FOCUS ON YOUR FIELD OF INTEREST...
In this age of accelerated learning you read. Most successful people realize that they are self-taught. Reading the latest book, researching out information on the Internet, reading Marketing Profs historical contribution to marketing requires a commitment to reading. So again focus on your field of interest and read your way to success. Remember reading is a communication vehicle. Is there anything else I can do for you? I love making people happy.

    Kristine,

I would really like to avoid telling you what areas to focus your attention.

LIFE IS LIKE WALKING DOWN A CORRIDOR....
as we move forward expected and unexpected doors open for us. Depending on which doors we choose to walk into we will be unveiling the diverse levels of experiences we can gain from the doors we walk into. Those doors will also lead us down other corridors that will open up new opportunities and close off other opportunties we could have chosen. What ever you do Kristine remember to enjoy the experience. Most people are so bent on getting to the end results of their goals that they fail to enjoy the day to day experiences of getting there. They don't enjoy the process.

    DO YOURSELF A FAVOR KRISTINE...
never ever limit yourself, expect the best and enjoy the present moment because that's all you have anyway. You will do great in marketing...go for it! Is there anything else I can do for you?
