I can understand your desire to have an agency in the Chicago area so you can sit down and look them in the eye, keep tabs on what they're doing, and check out their local references. That's a common client mindset in all sorts of consulting.

You would be well advised, however, to check out some of the folks who are NOT in your area. Travel expenses are relatively small compared to the value of what you would hire them to do, and you'd have a much broader range of suppliers from which to pick.

I can understand that you might not want someone in another country (except maybe Canada). Travel is a bit more difficult/costly and there could be cultural differences that would come into play. But if you could find a supplier in, say, Atlanta or Dallas (or Cleveland, or whatever), that could end up being an even better solution than a second-best agency around the corner.

Look at qualifications and track record, not zip code, as you search for someone who can get the job done for you.
