The Business Case For Online User Forums

Posted by Anonymous on 500 Points
Hello,

I've been involved with web design and web marketing for 10 years. I know the industry and understand the value of the technology. I bring this up only because I want to make sure I don't get responses trying to "teach" me something about how the web works etc., this isn't what I'm looking for -- I need to hear from any high level mangement people or business owners.

My question is what is your business case for or against online user forums?

I work as a webmaster for a software company, and I'm on a crusade to get forums up and running. The president, doesn't have the same feeling about forums, and hence I have this challenge. I'm not looking for only reasons to have a forum, I also want to hear any bad results that any of you have encountered.

I am about a month away from finishing the forums project, and just this morning the president sent me this interesting article regarding Dell removing their online user forums: https://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,121836,00.asp

Anway, any comments you have would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and have a great day

Miker, I know you're asking about forums and not blogs. However, your question reminded me of an earlier thread here. Check out:

I loved your blog and your way of preselling your services.
