Video Ideas On 'execution' For Company Offsite

Posted by Anonymous on 350 Points
We are having a company offsite and the theme this year is 'excellence in execution". My company is in the area of financial services with both B2B and B2B2C sales models. During the offsite we would like to motivate all employees (from customer service executive to the accountant to the operations executive) to perform his/her job excellently. We want to stress upon them that each one of us have to excel at our jobs for the team to collectively arrive at its goals. We have a one day offsite (conference) in Bangkok which will be attended by 125 employees. Employees will include all heads of functions, middle management and the junior most people in the company.
I am looking for suggestions of some videos, or any other ideas which will help us emphasise this point of 'execution in excellence' to them. We are still looking to fill 2 hours of the agenda on the day of the conference. please come up with reference of videos, ideas of gifts, team exercises for us.
Some ideas that we are already considering are - Showing the HONDA ad(how each piece fits into the puzzle and performs his/her job), distributing the books 'FISH' n 'FISH STICKS' for reading.

    Hi DeeDee,

Funny enough, your name means "good, good" in Thai. The locals will love it. The first thing for a successful offsite here in Bangkok is to make sure your teams get a good night sleep before the event, we are a bit of a tourist city.

I have a great website for you that you will be able to use for years to come with this kind of thing. It is:

    (URL deleted by staff)

There are loads of organizational games, materal, etc, on the site. Some of it is really good, some of it not, but you will be able to get loads of info off of that. Nothing I say could possibly add more to that.

    Cheers!

I totally agree with Randall! In fact, I was reading through the question and responses and thinking...hmmm, is this even the right forum for your question? Do you really think that seeing a 'motivational' video is motivational? You will have a diverse group of people in attendance, first thing I think of is how do you get this group on the same page...break down the natural barriers of position...and get them together by creating a sense of community. People don't excel in a vacuum...they function best when others see that they're excelling...and emulate it! Having a 'fiery' speaker with a good track-record come sounds like a terrific catalyst for this type of synergistic event. Go back and review the reason for your event and then you can create a setting to accomplish your goal. I guarantee that people won't forget the event or the people they shared it with...if a community is fostered. No video-viewing will accomplish this.

I suggest a Mind Mapping seminar....

and I would do it first...

Drive home the power of the other parts of your session by giving everyone a tool for better remembering it.

    Hi deedee,

I hope you're having a great day! (I hear you loud and clear).

It seems like every bodies saying the same thing in a different way. Since you're the customer (and I know that the customer is KING) let's just give you what you want even though it may not be what most people here on the forum think is the highest recommendation.

I think we all can learn a great lesson from this experience. Let's reclarify a few things. You have experienced speakers who you have already designated speaking time to for this particular event (correct?).

But you have 2 hours worth of breaks in varied lengths from 1-5 minutes which is why you suggested the following

deedee..."We thought of 1-5 minute videos, in between the speakers, as good fillers."

Now here's the disclaimer (I'm only recommending this because you would rather have additional videos for this time rather than a live facilitator. Is that correct?) Now if you're in agreement with the above here's my recommendation.

RECOMMENDATION #1....A GOOD IDEA FOR A TIME CHALLENGED EXECUTIVE...
Last year while reading the Stephen R. Covey book "The 8th HABIT" From Effectiveness to Greatness I discovered an amazing Bonus DVD with 16 inspirational companion films. These films have a lot of diverse scenarios from live interviews of varied lengths that focus on many qualities that are essential for building great corporations. My suggestion is that you view this yourself and choose some of the ideas.

RECOMMENDATION #2 CONTACT NIGHTINGALE CONANT...THE BEST IDEA OF THEM ALL...but only for those who like designing their work and those who are working without a time deficit...
Secondly I suggest getting in contact with Nightingale Conant Corporation "the leading producer of motivational products". Let them know that I referred you and ask to speak to one of the most knowledgeable product people in the company and here's why. They will have a great knowledge of all the DVD products that would fit your situation. Begin by explaining to them that you need short footage as a filler during breaks. The reason for this is so that their recommendations from their product line is a good fit when it comes to segmenting the visual concepts.

YOU MUST THINK LIKE A RECORD DJ TO DO THIS...
Please understand that they will not have explicit video footage broken down into these tight 1-5 minute time frames but you can take some of the better product and like a record dj drop in the video of your choice to fill that moments worth of time.

QUALITY TIME WILL BRING GREAT RESULTS...
Now for 2 hours worth of breaks you're probably going to spend several days searching out video material for some of those breaks. But if this event and more importantly your employees or co-workers (which are your customers) are that important to you, you'll invest the time.

    DISCLAIMER...
This is not my best recommendation for any of my clients but given your specific request (that we provide you with some video ideas for a motivational setting) this is a great solution that fits with in your specific request. If you have any questions pertaining to my suggestions above please make them known and I will reply.

    PS
    my personal recommendation is below...

NOW THINK LIKE A WORLD CLASS DJ...GIVE THEM A "HIT RECORD" SOMETHING THAT HAS EVERYONE UP ON THE DANCE FLOOR DANCING...i.e. something that allows everyone to participate and do their own dance, their own way...
If I were you (and I realize I'm not...so you may not like my recommendation but you will appreciate what I'm about to share with you) I would engage those at the event in a way that's personal and memorable. Allow them to ask questions from your experts who are presenting. If they (your expert speakers) really know their stuff and are really worth their weight in Gold their participation will make this part of the whole presentation the Hit of the event.

    Hey deedee, (part 2)

WHY 2 HOURS WORTH OF QUESTIONS & ANSWERS?

    Because this is really beneficial.

SELF EDUCATION is the best form of development...
In a generation of consumers who appreciate being kept informed it pays to let your people educate themselves by offering questions to your facilitator. Why?

LIKE THE DANCER ON THE DANCE FLOOR...LET YOUR CUSTOMERS DRIVE THE DJ...
people love to be in control. When you let them ask the questions they're in control even though someone else is giving the answers. yEAH! The DJ thinks she's "The Woman" unless your DJ's a man (lol) then he thinks he's "The Man" when it comes to really knowing the music stuff.

DOES THE DJ CONTROL THE MUSIC OR DO THE DANCERS CONTROL THE MUSIC?
Anyway you slice it the DJ thinks he's in control of what's happening on the dance floor until the people stop dancing to the music he's playing...Then the DJ realizes he needs to be up on the things that makes the dancers want to get on the dance floor. Isn't that's why they're paying him anyway?

SAME THING AT A MOTIVATIONAL PRESENTATION...Once the speaker has done his work let your speaker put the audience back in control by letting them control the questions and even some of the answers. You might be surprised (if you've got some really Great speakers) how much they step to the side and let people from the audience (yeah that's right people from your very audience) answer the questions. This allows your people to be the most creative...offering ideas and even letting them get on their soap boxes for a few minutes (remember They've only got 1- 5 minutes)

DOES YOUR COMPANY MAKE THESE KINDS OF MISTAKES???
One of the biggest problems most companies have (And I mean a lot of companies), even the Fortune 100 & the Fortune 500 companies. A great deal of them fail to enlist their *employees...

*(Employees=their most important and highly valued internal customer). They fail to involve them in the problem solving process. This is a great way to get additional mileage out of your employees wealth of knowledge. You might even be AMAZED... to find out that some of them are "Closet Experts".

I ALWAYS LET MY CUSTOMERS DO ALL THE WORK...
By the way did you ask a few dozen people at your company (*employees) what they might have wanted to do during the 1-5 minute breaks? I've found even when most companies do surveys and ask their employees what they truly think **they hear them with their ears** but they don't listen to them. Being attentive is something we all could do a little better. I know the answer to your current problem is right smack dab in the hearts and minds of your employees. Is there anything else I can do for you?

    Hi deedee,

I hope things are still going great for you. You deserve the best.

    NEW QUESTIONS BRING GREATER UNDERSTANDING...
My recommendation would be to open a new question. Why? If the question is off of the front page most people are not going to be as drawn to it. Plus the real benefits of asking new in depth questions are that they bring greater understanding and an ancient document with words of wisdom written in it said "in all your getting, get an understanding". Most people get a lot of things but the one thing they fail to get most is an indepth understanding of the new things.

FRONT PAGE QUESTIONS PULL MORE RESPONSES...THINK LIKE FRONT PAGE OF A NEWSPAPER it draws more attention...
I've always used additional new questions. They draw more attention because they wind up on the Front Page and the ALERT questions stay on the Front Page longer. And depending on how much attention I want to bring to the question I'll do the following two things.

    1. Load it with points
    2. Make it a KHE ALERT question.

Even when I've had additional question points I've still paid for this out of pocket for two reasons.

    1. It's cheaper to buy large volume of question points than it is to earn them (and you don't use up all your hard earned question points).

    2. It supports Marketingprofs and that's a good way to make a donation as you're using the forum ***but you do it the way you think it would make more sense***.

LOOK AT SOME OF MY PAST QUESTIONS AND SEE...
how I've even used new questions to bring life to old questions. I love making the experience new and exciting.

EXPERIMENT TO FIND OUT WHAT WORKS...MOST PEOPLE DON'T DO THIS...I DO THIS ALL THE TIME.
Truly experimenting is the only way to see what works and what doesn't...Most people don't experiment but "Don't YOU do this". They fail to experiment because of the following reasons below...but then again "Don't YOU do this"!

They don't know the value real experimentation brings to the process so they keep doing the same thing.

They're afraid to try something new. They're afraid to find out that the way they have been doing it really isn't working that well anymore.

They love repeating the same old thing that they've grown confident in. It's easier not wanting to even imagine that things have changed. BUT everything is always changing including people's *EHB...*"Emotional Human Behavior". So remember our only real problem in life is our failure to be "MORE Creative" than we’ve ever been. If you “Invent” your opportunity (and you can) YOU WILL most definitely create your future. Is there anything else I can do for you?

    Hi DeBrady,

not sure what you mean...Bud! But my "Enter" key can't get stuck on two separate days and 3 separate times. I wish I could get away with putting in this much time but the postings are very authentic and different all the way down to the specific times in which they were posted below.

Now I know as a technical writer you've got to be able to see that. Did you read them? You've got to be joking :-) Debra!
