Fee For Slogan Writing

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
Hello -

I've been copywriting for several years now, but rarely get hired to write slogans. I have a potential client just starting their small, independent business and is looking for a slogan, among other things. It seems to me that if her business takes off and the slogan that I wrote is on all her shirts, I should be compensated appropriately. Unfortunately, I don't know what would be appropriate. Do I need a separate, specific contract? And what do I base my compensation on?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

I don't mean this to sound like I'm coming down on you, but I don't think it's right of you to even suggest that be paid some bonus or royalty for developing a great slogan.

First, a slogan might be helpful, but it's never been the sole reason behind the success of a business. Your client's business could succeed with or without your slogan. You won't be able to attribute any future success directly to this effort.

Second, I'd think about how your client will feel about such a request. I know what my reaction would be: "Oh, so you want some upside on this...great. And when the business *needs* money, I can count on you to chip in for that, too, right? Like a partner, right? Oh, you don't want to do that? So, you want all the upside and no risk...got it."

I know that in certain copywriting fields there is a potential for huge, ongoing royalties, but I'm not sure that slogan writing is going to be one of them. Of course, I could be wrong. Happens all the time...just ask my wife!

I think I'd rather just have a happy client who tells others about me.

Thanks, all. Your comments were very helpful. The client is moving forward with me in small incremental projects based on her budget. Your thoughts have given me great ideas about how to approach the slogan writing when we get to it.

    Thanks,
    Robin
